Chicago Cubs pitcher Javier Assad underwent an MRI on Monday after experiencing oblique soreness during a spring training session. Manager Craig Counsell provided a reassuring update, indicating that Assad has only a mild oblique strain and should be sidelined for just a few days.
Assad, who made his MLB debut with the Cubs in 2022, has been a reliable arm both as a starter and reliever. In 2024, he started 29 games and posted a 3.73 ERA over 147 innings. However, with the Cubs set to open their regular season against the Dodgers in Japan on March 18-19, even a minor setback could keep Assad out of those games. The team is unlikely to rush his return.
His absence could create an early opportunity for Ben Brown, who is working his way back from a neck injury that ended his 2024 season in June. Other rotation depth options include Colin Rea and Jordan Wicks.
Assad, 27, originally stepped into the Cubs’ rotation last season when Jameson Taillon started the year on the injured list. He performed well early, posting a 3.04 ERA in his first 16 starts, but after missing time with a forearm strain in the summer, he struggled upon his return, recording a 4.64 ERA in his final 13 outings. His walk rate and home run rate increased in the second half, contributing to the decline.
Oblique injuries can be tricky, and while this appears minor, it still could result in a multi-week absence. Meanwhile, minor league pitcher Brandon Birdsell is dealing with a shoulder issue.
The 2022 fifth-round pick had a strong 2024 season, recording a 3.91 ERA across 135.2 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. While he wasn’t expected to make the big-league roster out of camp, the Cubs see him as a potential contributor later in the season.
With Assad’s status uncertain, the Cubs may have to lean on their starting depth early. Given how quickly injuries can pile up, having as many healthy arms as possible will be crucial heading into the season.
