JUST IN: Cubs Star Breaks Silence After Team Makes $6 Million Move

Posted on April 16, 2025

The Chicago Cubs have been active this MLB offseason. After trading 2019 National League MVP Cody Bellinger to the New York Yankees, they replaced him with three-time All-Star outfielder Kyle Tucker. The Cubs acquired Tucker in a trade with the Houston Astros, and the left-handed power hitter avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $16.5 million deal.

Additionally, they signed free-agent starting pitcher Matthew Boyd following his strong performance with the Cleveland Guardians. With these moves, the Cubs have bolstered their roster ahead of the 2025 MLB season. On Tuesday, the team made another addition, signing veteran right-handed slugger Justin Turner for $6 million (per Jordan Bastian of MLB.com).

Turner started the previous season with the Toronto Blue Jays, playing in 91 games before being traded to the Seattle Mariners at the trade deadline. A 16-year MLB veteran, Turner made his debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 2009, and later got his first major playing time with the New York Mets from 2010 to 2013.

He played 301 games for New York before entering free agency in 2013, when he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers—a move that significantly impacted his career. After spending nine seasons in Los Angeles, the Southern California native became the Dodgers’ all-time leader in postseason hits, RBIs, and home runs (tied with Max Muncy and Corey Seager).
