JUST IN: Drake Maye Voices Frustration with Vrabel’s ‘Old-School’ Coaching Style in…

Posted on May 8, 2025

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has reportedly voiced his frustration with head coach Mike Vrabel’s “old-school” coaching style during a private meeting held earlier this week. Sources close to the team have indicated that the second-year quarterback expressed concerns about the intensity and rigidity of Vrabel’s approach, particularly in contrast to the more collaborative environment he experienced previously.

While the exact details of the meeting remain confidential, it is understood that Maye feels some of Vrabel’s methods are not conducive to fostering open communication and the kind of dynamic learning environment he believes is essential for his development.

Maye, entering his second year in the league after being drafted third overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, is seen as the future of the Patriots’ franchise, and any friction between him and the head coach would be a significant concern for the organization.

Vrabel, known for his no-nonsense and disciplined approach, was brought in to instill a new level of toughness and accountability within the Patriots’ locker room after a disappointing 4-13 season. While many have lauded his experience and winning pedigree, some observers have wondered how his traditional style would mesh with a younger, more modern player like Maye.

“There’s definitely a contrast in styles,” said one source familiar with the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

“Drake comes from a college program where there was a lot of input from the quarterback, and he’s used to a more collaborative process. Vrabel’s way is more about the coach setting the tone and the players adhering to it.”

This reported friction comes at a crucial time for the Patriots, who are looking to rebuild and establish a new identity under Vrabel’s leadership. The team has made several significant acquisitions in the offseason, including veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs and offensive tackle Will Campbell, signaling their commitment to improving the offense around Maye.

However, the success of these moves hinges on the relationship between the quarterback and the coaching staff.

Publicly, both Maye and Vrabel have expressed optimism about their working relationship. In a press conference last week, Maye spoke positively about Vrabel’s experience and the new identity he is trying to instill in the team. “It’s been awesome. It’s been great with Coach [Vrabel],” Maye said.

“He’s come in here, and it seems like he’s been here a while. He’s so comfortable being a coach. He’s done it before, he’s done it at a high level, won a lot of games. Looking forward to getting things going. You can see he’s trying to install a new identity. I think we’re building toward1 that.”

For his part, Vrabel has also spoken highly of Maye’s potential, stating that the young quarterback was a “large part of the reason” he took the Patriots job. “I see a young, athletic, talented, full-of-potential player,” Vrabel said earlier this offseason. “Excited to build this team around (him) and a large part of the reason why I wanted to be here. And just that talent level, to be able to build around him and to be able to grow and help him and lead and run an offense and run a football team is something that I’m excited about.”2

Despite these positive public statements, the private meeting suggests that there may be underlying tensions that need to be addressed.

It remains to be seen how Vrabel will respond to Maye’s concerns and whether he will be willing to adapt his coaching style to better suit his young quarterback’s needs and preferences.

The coming weeks and months will be critical in determining the long-term dynamic between Drake Maye and Mike Vrabel. The Patriots’ success in the upcoming season and beyond could very well depend on their ability to bridge any stylistic differences and build a strong, collaborative working relationship. As the team continues its offseason preparations, this behind-the-scenes dynamic will undoubtedly be a key storyline to watch.
