Patriots Re-Sign 2x Super Bowl Champion David Andrews; Release CB Jonathan Jones to Commanders

In a series of unexpected roster moves, the New England Patriots have re-signed veteran center David Andrews, a two-time Super Bowl champion, after his brief release from the team. Concurrently, the Patriots have parted ways with long-time cornerback Jonathan Jones, who has signed a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders.

David Andrews’ Return

Initially released to create health balance, Andrews’ departure was met with surprise, given his pivotal role since joining the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2015. Serving as an eight-time team captain, Andrews started 121 of 124 games, contributing significantly to the team’s offensive stability and their Super Bowl LI and LIII victories. Despite a shoulder injury limiting him to four games last season, Andrews expressed a strong desire to continue his career. The Patriots have now re-signed him, ensuring his veteran leadership and experience remain integral to their offensive line.

Jonathan Jones’ Departure

Cornerback Jonathan Jones, another undrafted gem discovered by the Patriots in 2016, has signed a one-year deal with the Washington Commanders valued at up to $6.5 million, including incentives. Jones played a crucial role in the Patriots’ secondary, starting 44 games over the past three seasons and amassing 11 career interceptions. His speed and versatility were instrumental in the team’s defensive schemes, contributing to two Super Bowl titles during his tenure. In an emotional farewell, Jones expressed gratitude to the Patriots organization and fans, acknowledging New England as his enduring home.

Implications for the Patriots

These roster changes reflect the Patriots’ strategic adjustments under new head coach Mike Vrabel, aiming to balance veteran experience with emerging talent. Re-signing Andrews reinforces the offensive line’s leadership, while Jones’ departure opens opportunities for younger cornerbacks to step up. As the Patriots navigate free agency, these moves underscore their commitment to evolving the roster for future success.
