The Tampa Bay Rays are facing difficult decisions in the coming months that could open the door for the Chicago Cubs to capitalize.
With ongoing financial constraints, the Rays might be inclined to part ways with some of their higher-paid players, which could include someone like Yandy Díaz.
For the Cubs, strengthening their offense is a priority, and while they have established players at first and third base, Díaz’s potential as a bat is simply too valuable to overlook. Known for his power and impressive on-base skills—evidenced by a .330 average in 2023—he would provide a significant boost to the Cubs’ lineup.

Yardbarker’s Justin Mears has predicted that Díaz could be traded this season, further fueling speculation about a possible Cubs trade for him. Mears pointed out that Díaz, nearing free agency, could become a trade target if the Rays struggle to contend later in the summer.
Díaz, who has hit at least 23 home runs in two of the last four seasons, may face some strikeout challenges in 2024, but his ability to avoid bad pitches makes him an appealing target for teams like the Cubs. If he’s available, he’ll likely be one of the top names on the trade market, particularly for teams in need of a first or third baseman.
Given the Cubs’ strong farm system, they are well-positioned to make a move for Díaz if they decide to pursue him. With a career 125 OPS+, a Silver Slugger award, and an All-Star appearance, he would be an excellent addition to the Cubs’ lineup if the opportunity arises.
