LATEST UPDATE: Free-Agent And Experienced QB Agreed To Terms With 49ers On A Two-year Deal

Jones has agreed to a two-year contract with the Niners worth $7 million, including $5 million guaranteed, according to a source who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday night. The deal, which has a maximum value of $11.5 million, has not been officially announced, prompting the source to remain anonymous.

NFL Network was the first to report the agreement.

Jones was closely linked to San Francisco before the 2021 draft, following the Niners’ decision to trade three first-round picks to acquire the No. 3 overall selection. Head coach Kyle Shanahan was deciding between Jones and Trey Lance as the team’s future quarterback but ultimately chose Lance.

That decision did not pan out, as Lance struggled with injuries and adapting to Shanahan’s system. He started just four games over two seasons before being traded to Dallas in August 2023 for a fourth-round pick, losing the starting role to Brock Purdy, a 2022 seventh-round selection.

Now firmly established as San Francisco’s starter, Purdy holds the top spot, while Jones will have the opportunity to serve as his backup.
