Lions Cut Ties With Former Highly Touted Quarterback

Posted on April 24, 2025

Hours before the 2025 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions made a change at quarterback. The Lions announced Thursday it released signal-caller Jake Fromm. The 26-year-old was set to enter the team’s offseason program as the No. 4 quarterback on the Detroit depth chart. Fromm played for the Georgia Bulldogs from 2017-19. Fromm led the Bulldogs to a National Championship Game appearance as a freshman in 2017. Georgia was ahead of the Alabama Crimson Tide by 13 points at halftime of the 2017 title matchup, but after Alabama switched to Tua Tagovailoa behind center, the Crimson Tide scored 26 of the game’s final 36 points to win in overtime.

Fromm and the Bulldogs also suffered a blown lead versus Alabama in the 2018 SEC Championship Game.

Fromm posted a 36-7 record as a starter with the Bulldogs. Georgia didn’t win the National Championship until he was already in the NFL, but one could argue Fromm laid the groundwork for the Bulldogs to eventually win back-to-back championships. In three seasons with Georgia, Fromm registered a 63.2% completion percentage with 78 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. The quarterback threw for 8,224 yards in 43 games.

The Buffalo Bills drafted Fromm in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. The quarterback appeared in three games with the New York Giants during 2021.

Fromm hasn’t played in an NFL regular season game since then. In addition to the Bills, Giants and Lions, Fromm had a stint with the Washington Commanders.
