Kentucky had a long wait to get on the board in the 2026 recruiting cycle. The wait in 2027 was much shorter. The Wildcats added another recruiting win at quarterback on Monday evening. Knoxville (Tenn.) Bearden quarterback DJ Hunter is now a Cat.
The class of 2027 recruit transferred from Horn Lake (Miss.) High to Bearden in 2024 where he became a starter for the Bulldogs. The young player threw for over 1,400 yards in his first season in Tennessee high school football. The recruiting interest started to pickup after the season.
The unranked prospect took spring visits to Clemson, Virginia Tech, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia in March and April. DJ Hunter decided to make his decision after those trips were finished. The quarterback committed to Kentucky just over a week after his trip to Lexington.
For the second time in three cycles, a quarterback got the commitment list started for Kentucky on the high school trail. Stone Saunders was the first member of Kentucky’s 2025 class. The Wildcats were able to maintain that commitment despite some coaching changes. DJ Hunter will give the program an early pillar and someone to build around in the 2027 cycle. Recruiting is starting to pickup at the Joe Craft Football Training Facility.
