The Chicago Cubs are well aware—just like the rest of Major League Baseball—that bolstering their starting rotation will be a top priority at the trade deadline.
The only real question left is how many arms president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer will look to acquire as the July deadline approaches. Former MLB general manager Jim Bowden believes the Cubs should target Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Zac Gallen.
“The Cubs could really use another starter, and Gallen would be a great fit—even though he’s struggling this year with a 4-8 record and 5.15 ERA,” Bowden wrote. “Just two seasons ago, he started the All-Star Game for the National League and finished third in Cy Young voting. Last year, he was 14-6 with a 3.65 ERA.”
While 2024 hasn’t been kind to Gallen, there’s still hope he can rebound. His WHIP remains consistent with his career norms, hovering between 1.1 and 1.3. However, he’s giving up more hard contact than usual, and his strikeout rate ranks in just the 47th percentile, according to Baseball Savant.
“For the Diamondbacks to land a strong return package, Gallen would need three or four solid outings before the deadline,” Bowden added. “But if Arizona continues to slide out of playoff contention, they may have no choice but to deal him. To get back on track, Gallen must sharpen his fastball command and regain its late movement.”
If the Cubs were to pursue Gallen, they’d be acquiring a short-term rental. The 29-year-old is headed for free agency after the season, meaning Chicago would be responsible for the remainder of his $13.5 million salary, plus whatever trade assets are sent to Arizona.
