MAJOR BREAKING: Reese McGuire Comes Crawling Back: Catcher Rejoins Cubs After Brief Departure.

Posted on May 26, 2025

Reese McGuire, the 30-year-old catcher, has rejoined the Chicago Cubs organization on a minor league contract, returning to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs after a brief stint in free agency. McGuire had initially signed with the Cubs in January 2025 and spent the early part of the season with Iowa, posting a .

282 batting average, .366 on-base percentage, .479 slugging percentage, and an .845 OPS over 82 plate appearances. Despite this strong performance, he opted out of his contract last week in search of major league opportunities. However, with limited options available, McGuire has decided to return to the Cubs’ organization.

The Cubs’ major league catching roster remains robust, featuring Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya, who have combined for a .282/.370/.558 slash line with 11 home runs and 41 RBIs in 2025. Additionally, top prospect Moises Ballesteros is making strides in the minors.

McGuire’s return adds experienced depth to the Triple-A squad, where he joins veteran catcher Carlos Perez, who was recently named International League Player of the Week after an impressive performance.

While McGuire’s path back to the majors may be challenging given the current depth at the catcher position, his experience and offensive capabilities provide valuable support for the Cubs’ minor league system.
