Major Update: Chicago Cubs Gets Reinforcement update on 2 starting pitchers before trade deadline

Posted on June 2, 2025

The Chicago Cubs are actively exploring options to reinforce their starting rotation ahead of the 2025 MLB trade deadline. Recent developments, including injuries to key pitchers, have intensified the need for additional depth on the mound.

Injury Setbacks Prompt Urgent Search for Pitching Help

The Cubs have been hit with significant pitching injuries. Ace Justin Steele is expected to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing elbow surgery, and fellow starter Shōta Imanaga is sidelined due to injury. These setbacks have left the Cubs with a depleted rotation, prompting President of Baseball Operations Jed Hoyer to express the need for reinforcements. “We probably won’t do a lot of moves that only help us for this year,” Hoyer stated, emphasizing a focus on moves that benefit both the current and future seasons.

Trade Targets Under Consideration

In light of these challenges, the Cubs are reportedly exploring several trade options. One potential target is Minnesota Twins’ right-hander Pablo López, who is under contract through 2027. López has posted a 1.62 ERA in 16.2 innings this season, making him an attractive option to strengthen the Cubs’ rotation. Additionally, the Cubs are considering Miami Marlins’ ace Sandy Alcántara, who is under contract through 2027. Despite a challenging start to the season with a 7.27 ERA, Alcántara’s past performance and potential make him a candidate for the Cubs to pursue.

Internal Options and Trade Discussions

Internally, the Cubs are evaluating their current roster for potential trade assets. Pitchers Jameson Taillon, Hayden Wesneski, and Javier Assad have been mentioned as candidates who could be moved to address other needs or to acquire additional pitching depth. Additionally, veteran starter Marcus Stroman has been a subject of trade rumors, with several teams expressing interest in acquiring him before the deadline.

Upcoming Schedule and Rotation Plans

Looking ahead, the Cubs are set to face the Washington Nationals in a three-game series starting Tuesday, June 3, 2025. Following that, they will take on the Detroit Tigers in a three-game series beginning Friday, June 6. The Cubs’ rotation plans are currently in flux due to the recent injuries, and the team is expected to make adjustments as necessary.

Playoff Aspirations and Trade Strategy

As the trade deadline approaches, the Cubs’ front office is actively exploring options to reinforce their pitching staff and maintain their competitive standing in the National League Central. The potential acquisition of a starting pitcher like Pablo López or Sandy Alcántara represents a strategic move to address a critical need and strengthen the team’s foundation for future success.
