Major Update: Cubs Confirms Intriguing Report Regarding Top Star Matt Shaw

Posted on May 17, 2025

Chicago Cubs fans have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about the 2025 MLB season. The team made several key additions over the offseason, bringing in outfielder Kyle Tucker, reliever Ryan Pressly, starter Matthew Boyd, and designated hitter Justin Turner to strengthen both their lineup and pitching staff.

Another player drawing attention is top veteran, the Cubs’ top prospect according to MLB Pipeline. The 23-year-old infielder, who is capable of playing shortstop, third base, and second base, is expected to make his major league debut soon during the 2025 MLB Tokyo Series. he impressed in 2024, batting .298 with seven home runs and a .929 OPS in 35 games for Triple-A Iowa, while also stealing 25 bases in 33 attempts over 86 games with Double-A Tennessee. He further showcased his skills in the offseason, helping Team USA secure third place in the 2024 WBSC Premier12 tournament.

MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian recently predicted that Shaw could claim a major accolade in 2025, stating, “Matt Shaw will take home the NL Rookie of the Year Award.” While Shaw has a legitimate shot at winning the award, he’ll face stiff competition from other standout rookies, including Dodgers pitcher Roki Sasaki and Nationals outfielder Dylan Crews. A strong season from Shaw could provide a major lift to a Cubs franchise eager to return to the postseason for the first time since 2017.
