The Chicago Cubs desperately need to add a pitcher following the season-ending injury to Justin Steele. To make matters worse, Javier Assad was recently shut down with an oblique strain.
The pitcher the Cubs continue to be connected to is Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara. The righty is one of the better pitchers in baseball when he’s healthy and firing on all cylinders. He hasn’t found his stride yet this season, but he’s almost surely going to get better in the coming weeks.
ESPN’s David Schoenfield recently suggested the Cubs could trade top prospect Owen Caissie in the deal to try to land Alcántara. “With staff ace Justin Steele out for the season, the Cubs will be on the hunt for a replacement — and just happen to have a nice farm system with plenty of depth to make a deal for Alcántara,” Schoenfield wrote.
“Caissie and Kevin Alcántara (not related) are two young outfielders in Triple-A, and even if Tucker isn’t re-signed, there won’t be room for both youngsters in 2026, so either could headline a deal. Caissie’s high-end power potential would certainly be intriguing for the Marlins, who have long been searching for a power-hitting outfielder.”
Caissie is an elite prospect with elite traits for the Cubs, but losing somebody like him would be the price of doing business. If he can headline a deal for a stud pitcher like Alcántara, it’s hard to imagine the Cubs would pass it up, especially considering Alcántara is under team control for a few more years.
