PITTSBURGH, PA — The Pittsburgh Steelers organization is in deep mourning following the tragic death of Hall of Fame defensive lineman Charles Edward “Joe” Greene, famously known as “Mean Joe Greene,” who passed away at the age of 78 after suffering a catastrophic medical emergency late Tuesday evening.

Greene, widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive players in NFL history, was the heart and soul of the iconic Steelers’ “Steel Curtain” defense of the 1970s. A four-time Super Bowl champion, 10-time Pro Bowler, and two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Greene’s fearsome presence on the field helped define an era of dominance and toughness in Pittsburgh football.

In a statement released early Wednesday morning, Steelers President Art Rooney II said.

“Today, we lost a titan—not just of our franchise, but of the entire game of football. Joe Greene was more than a player; he was a symbol of grit, leadership, and Steelers pride. His impact on this organization is immeasurable, and we are devastated by his passing.”

Drafted fourth overall by the Steelers in 1969, Greene became the cornerstone of a team that would go on to win four Super Bowls in six years. Off the field, he was known for his humility, mentorship, and his legendary Coca-Cola commercial that captured hearts across America.

After retiring in 1981, Greene served as a defensive coach and later worked in the Steelers’ front office as a player personnel assistant, helping to shape future generations of talent.

The team announced that a public memorial service will be held at Acrisure Stadium, where fans can pay tribute to the man whose #75 jersey was retired in 2014 and whose name remains etched into the NFL’s most sacred history.

The entire Steelers Nation—and the world of football—now grieves the loss of a giant. Rest in peace, Mean Joe. Your legacy will live forever.
