MUST READ: DAVID PASTRNAK OPENS UP ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF TAKING OVER AS BRUINS CAPTAIN, HERE’S WHAT HE SAID…read more…

Posted on May 14, 2025

As the Boston Bruins look ahead to the next chapter of their storied franchise, one of the biggest questions looming over the team is who will take over as the next captain. With longtime captain Patrice Bergeron retiring after the 2024 season, the Bruins find themselves at a crossroads. Enter David Pastrnak, the team’s star winger, who has emerged as a leading candidate to wear the “C” on his sweater next season.

Pastrnak, known for his dazzling offensive skills and infectious personality, has been a cornerstone of the Bruins for years. After securing his place as one of the NHL’s top goal scorers, the 27-year-old Czech forward is now the face of the team. But when asked about the possibility of succeeding Bergeron as captain, Pastrnak struck a humble tone.

“I don’t take that responsibility lightly,” Pastrnak said during a recent interview. “Patrice was more than a captain. He was the heart and soul of this team. It’s not something I’m rushing into, but if the opportunity comes, I’ll give it everything I’ve got.”

Pastrnak’s approach reflects his deep respect for Bergeron and the culture he helped cultivate in Boston. As a member of the Bruins since 2014, Pastrnak has witnessed first-hand how Bergeron led by example both on and off the ice. The two have developed a strong bond over the years, with Bergeron mentoring Pastrnak through the ups and downs of an NHL career.

“The way Patrice conducts himself—his leadership, his work ethic, his humility—it’s something I admire every day,” Pastrnak continued. “Being in his shadow for so long has been a privilege, and if I’m asked to take over, I’ll do my best to honor what he’s built here.”

Despite his reservations about immediately stepping into such a significant role, Pastrnak has already shown leadership qualities on and off the ice. His fiery passion and competitive spirit have made him a natural leader in the locker room, and his consistent play has earned the respect of both his teammates and opponents alike.

“I think he’s ready for it,” said Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy. “Pasta is one of the most dynamic players in the league, and he’s matured so much over the years. He’s always been a leader by example, and I think the guys respect him more than anyone.”

While Pastrnak’s on-ice performance speaks for itself, the intangibles required to be a captain are equally important. Leadership involves more than just scoring goals; it’s about handling the pressures of being the team’s face, keeping the room united, and guiding the younger players. Pastrnak recognizes the weight of those responsibilities.

“You have to be ready for the challenges, and that’s not something I take lightly,” Pastrnak explained. “It’s a lot more than just being the best player. It’s about being there for your teammates, making sure the culture stays strong, and handling the media and the fans.”

The Bruins organization, led by general manager Don Sweeney and head coach Jim Montgomery, has been careful not to rush into naming a new captain. While many expect Pastrnak to eventually wear the “C,” the team has maintained a team-oriented approach in leadership, with a group of alternate captains stepping up in the interim.

“We’ve had a good group of leaders on this team for a long time, and we’re not in a hurry to make that decision,” said Sweeney. “David has been a big part of this team for many years, and we’re confident that when the time is right, he’ll be ready to take on that role.”

For now, Pastrnak is focused on continuing to lead the Bruins in his own way. His relentless work ethic, coupled with his infectious personality, has made him a fan favorite in Boston. His ability to stay grounded despite being one of the league’s top stars is part of what makes him a natural fit for the captaincy.
