Next Man Up: Marshawn Kneeland’s door is open….

Posted on April 10, 2025

In the world of professional football, change is the only constant. Players come and go, injuries strike unexpectedly, and opportunities open for those who stay prepared. For Marshawn Kneeland, the NFL door has creaked open—and now, it’s his time to burst through.

The phrase “next man up” has been used for decades to describe the league’s merciless nature. But for Kneeland, it’s not just a slogan—it’s a call to action. After years of quiet preparation and steady growth, the versatile edge rusher now finds himself with a golden opportunity to prove that he belongs, that his name deserves to be mentioned among the league’s emerging defensive threats.

This is the story of a small-school standout, a relentless worker, and a young man stepping into the limelight at the perfect time.

Humble Beginnings, Relentless Drive

Marshawn Kneeland’s football journey didn’t begin under Friday night lights in a Texas football mecca or in the media frenzy of high school showcases. He hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where football was just one of many outlets for a young athlete with big dreams.

Recruiting analysts didn’t circle his name in red ink. Power Five schools weren’t pounding down his door. Instead, it was Western Michigan University—a MAC school with a strong football tradition—that took a chance on him. For Kneeland, it wasn’t about fame or facilities. It was about an opportunity to play, grow, and show the world what he could do.

At Western Michigan, he became a standout almost immediately. Over his four years with the Broncos, he developed into one of the most feared edge rushers in the conference. His size, speed, and motor allowed him to routinely disrupt plays behind the line of scrimmage, drawing double-teams and game plans designed specifically to slow him down.

By the time his senior year wrapped up, he had 28.5 tackles for loss and 13 sacks to his name. More importantly, he had grown into a disciplined, technically sound defender who could impact games on every down. The NFL scouts took notice.
