NFL announces debut of end-of-year award for offensive linemen, Protector of the Year; two Rams legends to serve on selection panel

Posted on May 29, 2025

The big men up front are finally getting their due credit.

The NFL last week announced the debut of a new Protector of the Year Award, which will honor the league’s best offensive linemen each season beginning in 2025. The award “symbolizes protection, durability, and the unsung heroics of the players who shield their teammates and drive their teams forward,” according to a press release from NFL Operations.

“This award means everything to the big guys up front,” Rams legend and former left tackle Andrew Whitworth said via press release. “The Protector of the Year isn’t just about stats – it’s about the mindset, grit, and leadership it takes to be the foundation of a football team. It’s time the men who lead, protect, and never ask for credit are recognized as the backbone of this game.”

The end-of-season award will be presented annually at NFL Honors, spotlighting offensive linemen’s contributions. Offensive linemen were previously the only players not eligible for most on-field awards.

Whitworth and Bills offensive guard and four-time Pro Bowler Dion Dawkins were both credited for pushing for the creation of the award. The recipient will be selected by a panel of former offensive linemen using the below criteria, according to NFL Operations:

  • Skill Metrics: pass-block win rate, run-block win rate, penalties allowed, sacks allowed, helmet contact
  • Impact: contribution to the team’s offensive success (e.g., total rushing yards, QB protection stats)
  • Leadership: display of leadership, teamwork, and consistency on and off the field
  • Durability: minimum number of snaps, games played
  • Strength of Opponent: Success vs. high-performing defenders

Former Saints and Browns center/guard LeCharles Bentley, former Eagles center Jason Kelce, former Browns and Giants center Shaun O’Hara, former Rams left tackle Orlando Pace and former Chiefs guard Will Shields join Whitworth on the selection panel. Dawkins is unable to serve on it because he is a current player.

This Protector of the Year award is finally giving the big boys up front the respect we deserve,” Dawkins said via press release. “I’ve been knocking on doors and spearheading this movement because offensive linemen are the true foundation of every team’s success. We might not have all the fancy stats as the skinnies or end up on a highlight reel every week, but without us, there’s no rushing titles, passing titles, or touchdowns. This award is for all the unsung heroes who put in work every snap. I won’t stop fighting to give offensive linemen the respect and recognition we deserve.”
