The NFL Draft is set to begin in a little over 48 hours as the Cleveland Browns appear to be settled on Travis Hunter being the pick at two. A report earlier in the day has suggested the Browns are listening to offers on trading out of the pick and that scenario would seemingly open the conversation back up to possibly drafting a QB.
If they could move down and get an extra pick on day two as well as an extra first-round pick next year, the Browns would have to consider it. As the draft cycle has worn on, it appears that Shedeur Sanders has fallen in the eyes of evaluators, but the possibility of keeping him together with Hunter is tantalizing.
When you consider that Sanders would be a good match for Kevin Stefanski’s offense, which relies on the QB to throw within structure and on time, the idea becomes plausible. In an article written by Ben Solak of ESPN, he ranks Cleveland as the second-best team fit for Sanders, only behind the New York Giants.
Despite ranking the Browns high, he does have questions about the fit currently.
Solak writes, “As constructed, the Browns are not good for Sanders — or anyone. Their best receiver is Jerry Jeudy, who would pair nicely with Sanders for their improvisational skills and willingness to extend plays. But Jeudy is not a reliable pass catcher, especially with contact, and Sanders throws his receivers into lots of contact.”
He also notes the Browns’ lack of youth on the offensive line and their deficient run game as areas of concern. Drafting Hunter, though, would erase the negatives and make the Browns a great landing spot for Sanders, according to Solak.
He writes: “Sanders and Hunter have a chemistry that is rare at the college level, even between two NFL-bound players. Having Hunter to bail him out from his long scrambles and 50-50 throws would immediately and dramatically ease Sanders’ onboarding ramp.”
This pairing would be a massive headline and create buzz around the league. It will be interesting to see if the Browns can pull it off.
