The offseason is the time for exciting sound bites. For the New Orleans Saints, a recent group of comments from Drew Brees may make some fans do a double take when it comes to rookie quarterback Tyler Shough.
Brees’ comparison for rookie QB Tyler Shough
The legendary Saints quarterback actually mentioned that Shough shares some similarities to Taysom Hill. Hill, a long-time gadget player and fan favorite in New Orleans, has never flourished as a full-time QB – but rather a special teams ace and legitimate weapon around the team’s offense at multiple positions.
Both Shough and Hill dealt with multiple major injuries during their college careers. Both players play with a ton of grit and effort.
You can feel the “coach speak” in Brees’ voice, even though he is not on New Orleans’ staff. He doesn’t want to award the job to Shough automatically, when Spencer Rattler remains on the depth chart after some starting action last year.
That being said, he sounds hopeful that Shough can be a long-term answer for the Saints. He made sure to clarify that Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler will both compete for the starting role as well. They won’t roll over for the rookie, and that is true. No matter what – hearing Taysom and Shough in the same sentence may make plenty of Saints fans raise an eyebrow, especially when it is coming from the greatest QB in franchise history and one of the most decorated in NFL history.
We will see if the first-year QB can prove doubters wrong and find success in year one. He’s got a new first-round offensive lineman in front of him in Kelvin Banks Jr. and some very capable passing game weapons in Chris Olave, Alvin Kamara, Juwan Johnson, among others.
