PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have locked down one of the cornerstones of their defense, officially announcing today that All-Pro linebacker T.J. Watt has signed a three-year contract extension worth $40.5 million. The deal keeps Watt in the black and gold through the 2028 season and further solidifies his status as the heart of the Steelers’ ferocious defense.

Watt, 30, has been a dominant force since being selected by Pittsburgh in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. A former Defensive Player of the Year, Watt has become synonymous with relentless pressure and game-changing plays. With this extension, he becomes one of the highest-paid linebackers in the league, averaging $13.5 million annually.

Steelers general manager Omar Khan expressed confidence in Watt’s continued impact. “T.J. Watt is the definition of what it means to be a Pittsburgh Steeler,” Khan said in a statement. “His work ethic, leadership, and unmatched intensity on the field make him one of the premier defensive players in the NFL. We’re thrilled to keep him in Pittsburgh for the foreseeable future.”

Watt has compiled 96.5 career sacks, 27 forced fumbles, and countless quarterback pressures during his tenure with the Steelers. In 2021, he tied the NFL single-season sack record with 22.5, earning him Defensive Player of the Year honors and further cementing his legacy as one of the game’s elite defenders.

The extension comes as the Steelers aim to remain competitive in the AFC North, a division stacked with offensive talent. Securing Watt’s services long-term was a priority for the franchise heading into the 2025 offseason, especially as Pittsburgh continues to retool its defense under head coach Mike Tomlin.

“I couldn’t be more excited to stay in Pittsburgh,” Watt said in a team release. “This organization, this city, and the fans mean everything to me. I’ve grown a lot here, and I’m not done yet. There’s still work to do, and I’m committed to bringing another championship back to this team.”

Watt’s deal reportedly includes $28 million in guaranteed money, ensuring financial security while giving the team flexibility with the salary cap. The structure of the contract also reflects Watt’s willingness to help the Steelers maintain a competitive roster.

With Watt locked in and the Steelers defense continuing to develop young talent, Pittsburgh is positioning itself to make a serious postseason push in the years ahead. One thing is certain: the Watt era in Pittsburgh is far from over.
