Official Steelers News: Steelers Reached Agreement To Flip 1st-Round Pick for Dual-Threat $34 Million QB

Steelers Could Trade 1st-Round Pick for $34 Million Dual-Threat QB

The Pittsburgh Steelers remain in limbo as they wait for Aaron Rodgers to decide on their standing contract offer. With each passing day, the possibility of exploring alternative quarterback options increases. While the easiest route is selecting a QB with the No. 21 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, the uncertainty surrounding available prospects makes this a risky move. Instead, Pittsburgh could use that pick in a trade for a young quarterback already in the league who needs a fresh start.

One potential target is Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2022 draft.

Last season, the Colts benched Richardson in favor of veteran Joe Flacco before reinstating him as the starter. With Flacco now a free agent, Indianapolis has brought in former New York Giants QB Daniel Jones on a one-year deal, setting up a competition for the starting role.

If Jones wins the job, Richardson’s future with the Colts could be in doubt, potentially making him available for trade before the season begins. ESPN’s Bill Barnwell proposed a scenario where the Steelers send their No. 21 pick to Indianapolis in exchange for Richardson and the Colts’ second-round selection (No. 45). As part of the deal, Pittsburgh would also send a conditional 2027 draft pick.

Barnwell believes Richardson would be a strong fit in Pittsburgh’s offense, highlighting his arm strength as a complement to receivers DK Metcalf and George Pickens. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith has experience designing quarterback-run plays, which would align well with Richardson’s dual-threat abilities. Even if Rodgers signs with the Steelers, Richardson could sit for a season before taking over in 2026.

Richardson’s contract runs through 2025, with a potential fifth-year option in 2027. If Pittsburgh is looking for a dynamic young QB, he could be a viable trade target.
