One Specific Position Group A Worry For Chiefs

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes made the most of limited receiver options in 2023, and he managed to get some more help in 2024

Marquise Brown, Juju Smith-Schuster, and DeAndre Hopkins all came in to help the Chiefs cover the host of injuries they suffered, and now, as the 2025 offseason approaches, all will be free agents.

That leaves Xavier Worthy and the returning Rashee Rice as Mahomes’ only real go-to weapons in the passing game

And for ESPN’s Adam Teicher, the potential lack of depth at the position is a worry.

“The Chiefs have last year’s first-round draft pick, Xavier Worthy, and they are counting on a return from Rashee Rice, who missed most of last season with a knee injury,” Teicher writes. “But they don’t have much depth, particularly if Brown leaves as a free agent.”

Of course, Brown, Smith-Schuster, and Hopkins could return in 2025, but it remains to be seen if the Chiefs want to return to that well.

With Rice and Worthy as a one-two punch, Chicago Bears receiver Keenan Allen has been linked with a move to the Chiefs to give Mahomes three genuine weapons in the passing game.

Is that enough for Mahomes? We also need to factor in Travis Kelce’s situation. If he chooses to return, that gives Mahomes another weapon, and while he isn’t what he used to be, he still commands respect from the defense.

The lack of depth at receiver is concerning, but the Chiefs have the chance to fix that, and we don’t imagine it will break the bank to do it, either.

Rice and Worthy are the go-to guys, but they’ll need help, and where they get it from right now is unknown.
