Packers CEO has given Brian Gutekunst the green light to make a big draft day move

Posted on April 12, 2025

Many people were high on the Green Bay Packers’ prospects not even one calendar year ago, but they fell a bit short of expectations last season, and now they need an infusion of talent in order to take the next step.

They have been a good team in two seasons with Jordan Love as their starting quarterback. But many pegged them as Super Bowl contenders going into last season, and their meager offseason moves won’t improve their chances of winning their fifth Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Historically, the Packers haven’t been a franchise that looks to make big moves in either free agency or on the trade market. But that may have shifted just a bit after they nabbed running back Josh Jacobs, who ran for 1,329 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2024, in free agency last spring.

Mark Murphy, the CEO of the storied franchise, said to ESPN Milwaukee that he has told general manager Brian Gutekunst to trade out of the first round of the upcoming draft if needed.

“I told Gutekunst, if it’s the best thing for the Packers to trade out of the first round, go ahead,” Murphy said.

Green Bay currently has the No. 23 pick in the first round of the NFL draft, which will begin on April 24. It needs a true alpha wide receiver, as well as edge rushing help, and there could be options out there for the team if it is willing to be bold enough.

The Packers haven’t taken a wideout in the first round since 2002 — in fact, that was the last time they took a wideout, running back or tight end in the first round. There could be one or two potential-laden wideouts available for them at No. 23, but maybe, just maybe, they will instead trade that pick in order to go for someone more proven
