Panthers Consider Adding Former Patriots Linebacker Who Won Super Bowl

NFL Free Agency: Panthers Interested in Former Patriots Super Bowl-winning Linebacker

Ja’Whaun Bentley could provide some much-needed depth to the Carolina Panthers’ linebacker corps.

At this stage in the offseason, the Panthers have largely filled their defensive needs, bringing in new talent to shore up key positions. However, with free agency options dwindling, Carolina could still benefit from adding a veteran free safety like Julian Blackmon or a cornerback like Mike Hilton for added depth.

Linebacker depth remains a concern. Currently, Josey Jewell and Christian Rozeboom are slated to start, but if either player suffers an injury, the Panthers might have to lean on untested Trevin Wallace, who may not yet be ready for a significant role.

One veteran linebacker still available who could help is Ja’Whaun Bentley, formerly of the New England Patriots, with whom he won a Super Bowl in 2019. Bentley is ranked among the top 10 free agents under 30 by Bleacher Report.

“Since earning a starting role in 2020, Bentley has added value as a pass rusher, recording 10 sacks. Though his coverage skills are somewhat limited, he’s a proven asset against the run and effective as a blitzer. More consistent than other free-agent linebackers, Bentley could instantly bolster the defense of a playoff contender,” Bleacher Report noted.

While the Panthers may not yet be considered playoff contenders, at least one analyst believes Bentley could be a solid fit. According to Last Word on Sports, the Panthers are one of five teams that could potentially land Bentley.

Bentley brings a solid mix of youth and experience, though he’s recovering from a torn pectoral muscle that sidelined him for the rest of last season after just two games.

While targeting Bentley could strengthen Carolina’s linebacker depth, the team’s more urgent need is at safety—unless they’re willing to take a gamble on Lathan Ransom to start alongside Tre’Von Moehrig. For now, addressing the free safety position should likely be the Panthers’ top priority, with other positions taking a back seat.
