REPORT: Steelers Star Makes Surprise Appearance At OTAs

Posted on May 1, 2025

Pittsburgh Steelers’ rookie offensive tackle Troy Fautanu has been fully cleared to resume football activities, sources told ESPN. The promising lineman, speaking to reporters for the first time since his season-ending knee injury in 2024, expressed enthusiasm about rejoining his teammates at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

Fautanu suffered a dislocated kneecap with ligament damage during Week 2 against the Denver Broncos on September 14, 2024, after a collision while blocking for Najee Harris. The injury, requiring surgery, sidelined him for the entire 2024 season, demanding an eight-month recovery involving extensive physical therapy.“I’m back with my brothers, feeling better than ever,” Fautanu said Tuesday. “OTAs are huge for me.

Missing my rookie year was tough, but I’m ready to protect our QB and pave the way.” He reported no setbacks in his rehab, which included strength training and mobility drills. Before the injury, Fautanu, the 20th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft from Washington, was poised to start at right tackle. His college tape—boasting a PFF grade of 82.3 and the 2023 Morris Trophy—showcased elite pass protection and run blocking.

His absence forced Pittsburgh to rely on Dan Moore Jr. and Broderick Jones, contributing to 42 sacks allowed in 2024.Fautanu’s recovery tested his resilience. “Watching the team struggle without me hurt,” he admitted. “My family and trainers kept me grounded.”

His workout clips on X, displaying agile footwork and power, ignited excitement among Steelers Nation. His return bolsters an offensive line featuring Zach Frazier and Mason McCormick. “Troy’s a mauler,” coach Mike Tomlin said. “He’s moving, blocking, looking like a star.” Fautanu aims to lock down the right tackle spot, building on his pre-injury promise.

The Steelers, who fell in the AFC Wild Card round, face roster challenges, including uncertainties at quarterback and running back depth. Fautanu’s clearance lifts spirits as they prepare for their opener against the New York Jets on September 7. At 23, Fautanu is confident: “My best is yet to come. I’m chasing a Super Bowl in 2025.” With OTAs underway, his return energizes a Steelers squad eyeing a championship.
