Russia’s ‘Satellite Killer’ S-500 AD System, 200-Ton RS-28 Sarmat ICMB To Be Put On Combat Duty By 2024, Senior Official Says
Deputy Defense Minister Alexei Krivoruchko recently revealed that the delivery of the Sarmat complexes, previously heralded as “invincible” by President Vladimir Putin, is set to be finalized by the end of 2024. This disclosure, made on January 26, emphasized the pivotal role of military-technical support in completing the deployment of the Sarmat strategic missile system within the Strategic Missile Forces.
The RS-28 Sarmat, commonly known as Satan 2, forms part of the advanced missile arsenal introduced by Putin in 2018, alongside the Kinzhal and Avangard hypersonic missiles. Weighing over 200 tons and equipped to transport multiple warheads, the Sarmat employs a unique strategy to evade anti-missile defense systems, executing a brief initial boost phase to reduce the window for enemy surveillance and monitoring.
On the same day, it was revealed that the silos for the active duty of Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM), Yars ICBMs, and Avangard are now prepared. Deputy Defense Minister Krivoruchko assured that infrastructure provisions for the strategic missile complexes in Kaluga, Orenburg, and Krasnoyarsk regions were completed on schedule.
Additionally, the completion of the second stage of the unified technical space rocket complex at the Plesetsk spaceport was highlighted. This facility is crucial for storing, maintaining, and preparing Angara rockets for launch.
Looking ahead to 2024, Krivoruchko outlined principal objectives, including the arrival of Tu-160M missile carriers and the deployment of the highly anticipated S-500 anti-aircraft missile system in the Aerospace Forces. The S-500, touted as the most advanced globally, boasts the capability to intercept volleys of hypersonic missiles, with claims of targeting satellites in low-earth orbit and fifth-generation stealth aircraft.
Krivoruchko underscored the comprehensive goals for the ongoing year, emphasizing the timely supply of in-demand weapons and military equipment. The agenda extends to increasing the production and share of missiles and ammunition, with a specific focus on advancing hypersonic missile systems.
Furthermore, the commitment to enhancing the production of the entire spectrum of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and prioritizing advancements in electronic warfare systems, artillery systems, reconnaissance, and counter-battery warfare reflects Russia’s dedication to staying at the forefront of military technology. As the geopolitical landscape evolves, Russia’s strategic vision for its military capabilities remains dynamic, marked by continuous innovation and preparedness across various domains.
