Sad News: Panthers TE Tommy Tremble Had Back Surgery, Out Until Camp

Posted on May 28, 2025

Carolina Panthers tight end Tommy Tremble recently underwent back surgery and will be sidelined until training camp, marking a significant development for the team as they prepare for the 2025 NFL season. The 24-year-old, who will turn 25 on June 2, had been dealing with persistent back issues throughout the 2024 season. Despite these challenges, Tremble managed to play in 12 games, starting in 11, and recorded 23 receptions for 234 yards and two touchdowns.

The surgery was deemed successful, and according to head coach Dave Canales, Tremble is expected to begin the rehabilitation process during training camp. The goal is for Tremble to return in time for the start of the regular season, which kicks off for the Panthers on September 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. While the news of his surgery is unfortunate, the team remains optimistic about his recovery and long-term health.

Tremble has become a vital part of the Panthers’ offensive unit. Known for his toughness and versatility, he made headlines in the season finale against the Atlanta Falcons by catching a no-look touchdown pass from quarterback Bryce Young — a play that underscored his athleticism and connection with the young QB. Tremble’s combination of blocking ability and pass-catching skills make him a unique asset, particularly in an offense that values multi-dimensional tight ends.

Earlier this offseason, Tremble solidified his place on the team by signing a two-year, $16 million contract extension, which includes $8 million guaranteed. The extension not only reflects the team’s belief in his abilities but also their commitment to developing a cohesive offensive core around Bryce Young. Tremble’s leadership and experience are expected to play a crucial role as the Panthers aim to rebound from a challenging 2024 season.

With Tremble out for the time being, the Panthers will turn to a group of younger and less experienced tight ends to step up during OTAs and minicamp. Ja’Tavion Sanders, who had an impressive rookie season with 33 receptions for 342 yards and a touchdown, is expected to take on a larger role. Additionally, fifth-round draft pick Mitchell Evans will have a chance to showcase his potential. Other options include Dominique Dafney, James Mitchell, and Bryce Pierre, all of whom will be competing for playing time and a more prominent role in the offense.

The Panthers’ coaching staff will use this time to evaluate the depth and flexibility of the tight end position. While Tremble’s absence is certainly a setback, it also opens the door for others to gain valuable reps and prove themselves in a competitive environment.

As the countdown to training camp begins, all eyes will be on Tommy Tremble’s recovery. If he can return to full strength by the start of the season, the Panthers will regain a key contributor who could play an instrumental role in turning around the team’s fortunes. Until then, the team will focus on building chemistry and depth, with the hope that their star tight end will be back in time to make an impact.
