Aaron Rodgers has not yet signed with a team, and the Pittsburgh Steelers appear to still be looking for a quarterback. For some reason, the four-time MVP Award holder has not yet made a decision about playing next season. Nonetheless, as the 2025 schedule is gradually announced, it appears he would face the New York Jets for a revenge match if he joined Pittsburgh.
According to Ari Meirov of the 33rd Team and YouTuber Matt O’Leary, reports suggest that the Steelers will compete against the Jets in New York during Week 1.
Should Rodgers sign with Pittsburgh, he’ll have an opportunity to quiet the New York critics in the season opener. Furthermore, the same applies to Jets quarterback Justin Fields.
Interesting: The Jets will kick off the season at home versus the Steelers in a match that might see Justin Fields going up against his old team — and potentially Aaron Rodgers doing the same. “Matt O’Leary was the first to bring it up.”
The 41-year-old quarterback did not enjoy a highly successful time with the Jets. Supporters were ecstatic when the team first acquired Rodgers.
Many thought his inclusion transformed the team into a sudden contender in the AFC. Regrettably, it was a failure from the beginning.
Aaron Rodgers experienced a torn Achilles injury in his first game with the team and missed the whole 2023 season. He recovered in 2024 and achieved good statistics.
However, his performance did not result in significant success during the game. The Jets concluded the 2024 season with a 5-12 record, during which Rodgers passed for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns, achieving a completion rate of 63.0%.
The Jets ultimately began again after dismissing head coach Robert Saleh in the middle of last season. New York appeared to seek a new beginning and opted to let go of Aaron Rodgers at the season’s conclusion.
Since that time, the Steelers have been solidly in contention to sign the Super Bowl XLV champion quarterback.
As Rodgers stays unsigned for the time being, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and newcomer Will Howard on their roster. There are speculations that Pittsburgh aims to bring in an additional veteran for the quarterback position this offseason.
That might be Aaron Rodgers. Nevertheless, there remains some speculation that the front office might acquire Kirk Cousins from the Atlanta Falcons, or possibly sign another free agent who is currently available.
