Steelers Quarterback Russell Wilson Drop 7 Word Message on Steelers Future

Posted on May 18, 2025

It’s not entirely certain who the Pittsburgh Steelers may want to re-sign as quarterback for the 2025 season. However, Russell Wilson has indicated that he wishes to come back.

Wilson reiterated his intentions once more during his appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on January 22. Following his appearance, Wilson retweeted a clip from the show along with a 7-word caption.

“Love my teammates! Best days are ahead,” wrote Wilson.

Wilson will become an unrestricted free agent. He was an unrestricted free agent in the previous offseason when the Steelers agreed to a 1-year deal with him.

Including the playoffs, Wilson recorded a 6-6 record as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback in the 2024 season. In 11 regular season contests, he achieved a 63.7% completion rate with 16 touchdown passes and five interceptions while averaging 7.4 yards per throw.

Russell Wilson Praises His Steelers Teammates

Wilson has earned a reputation throughout the league for his exceptionally upbeat attitude. That has been somewhat of a blessing and a disadvantage for the quarterback.

Though some have labeled him as insincere, others probably view his overly flattering demeanor as one of his more charming characteristics. The quarterback was entirely complimentary when speaking to his Pittsburgh teammates during his guest appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on January 22.

“Having playmakers around you always makes it enjoyable,” Wilson said to McAfee. “George Pickens is an incredible athlete on the field, and I believe Pat Freiermuth had an excellent season.” In my opinion, the standout star of this season was definitely Calvin Austin. His rise and his dedication to work [were remarkable].

“And clearly the individuals in the front.” They perform excellently in competing on every play and providing us an opportunity to make plays.

Just like his personality, Wilson’s decision to include Calvin Austin III can be interpreted in two distinct ways. While it was commendable that he acknowledged the less-recognized Steelers playmaker, the problem during the season could have stemmed from Wilson equating Austin’s playmaking skills with those of George Pickens and Pat Freiermuth.

In 2024, Wilson frequently looked for Austin downfield for a chance at a jump ball. Austin is 5-foot-9 tall, which does not make him ideal for that style of play.

In the meantime, Pickens ranks among the top bad-ball receivers in the NFL.

Nevertheless, Wilson evidently wished for McAfee’s audience to understand that he cherished all his teammates in Pittsburgh. The quarterback emphasized once again that he wishes to come back.

“Entering Pittsburgh held a unique significance for me.” “I really enjoy it,” he said. “I hope to be able to play there for much longer.”

“It’s a unique setting due to the teammates in the locker room, the customs, the individuals, and the victories.” You have all of that along with Mike Tomlin, who is among the greatest coaches ever.

Will the Steelers Re-sign Wilson or Justin Fields?

During Thanksgiving, there was little doubt that Wilson would return to Pittsburgh for 2025. However, following a close to the season with a 5-game losing streak, the story has changed.

Several analysts appear to be forecasting Wilson’s return to the Steelers.

On January 18, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette detailed the reasons why Wilson is unlikely to make a return.

“Dulac reported that when Wilson and the Steelers struck a one-year deal at the veteran minimum in March, both parties aimed to finalize a more extended contract following the season.” “However, considering how the season concluded with five straight defeats and a rift with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, that agreement may not come to fruition.”

“Wilson was brought in to assist in ending the playoff win drought, but it didn’t occur.”

Dulac stated that acquiring another experienced quarterback to take Wilson’s place isn’t logical. The Steelers hold the No. 21 overall pick, making it unlikely that they will select a quarterback to begin in 2025.

However, the Steelers might re-sign Justin Fields, who is a decade younger than Wilson. Because of that age gap, Fields has greater long-term potential. Fields recorded a 4-2 record as the starting quarterback for the Steelers in 2024.

Until a conclusive decision is reached, it appears Wilson will actively campaign for his return to the black and gold.
