The Pittsburgh Steelers are in search of outstanding players in this year’s NFL Draft, and one quarterback continues to attract attention. The quarterback in question is Shedeur Sanders, a former player for Colorado. Although excitement for Sanders is increasing, there are various factors that might prevent the Steelers from selecting him.
ESPN NFL insiders think that the ambiguity regarding veteran Aaron Rodgers is a factor that could hinder progress.
“I keep hearing that Pittsburgh aims to target a quarterback in one of the next two drafts, with next year’s group viewed as more robust,” wrote ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Another challenge confronting the Steelers is that they possess several additional requirements. According to the source, this encompasses both the defensive tackle position and running back. Pittsburgh has the 21st overall pick in the NFL Draft, which begins on Thursday.
Shedeur Sanders has caught the attention of the Steelers.
The Steelers have had multiple meetings with Sanders during this offseason. The star quarterback from Colorado has also held discussions with other NFL teams, such as the New York Giants.
“He left a significant positive impact on the coaching staff during the predraft process, and the absence of a second-round pick could actually lead the Steelers to reach for a QB on Day 1,” wrote ESPN’s Dan Graziano.
One ESPN football writer thinks the Steelers will select Sanders in the first round. That is Peter Schrager, who emphasizes that both sides had constructive discussions.
“Heading to Pittsburgh as the second quarterback in this class wouldn’t be too terrible,” Schrager noted. Sanders assisted in leading Colorado to a 9-victory season last year. It was the inaugural campaign for the school in the Big 12 conference. Sanders concluded the season with a total of 4,134 yards and 37 touchdown passes. The Steelers are seeking quarterbacks following the exits of Justin Fields and Russell Wilson. Wilson has agreed to a contract with the Giants, whereas Fields is now part of the New York Jets.
Pittsburgh reconnected this offseason with Mason Rudolph, who played for Tennessee during the 2024 season. Rudolph passed for 1,530 yards with the Titans during the last season. Tennessee experienced a difficult season, securing only three wins. It’s crucial for the Steelers to make the right decision at quarterback. Mike Tomlin faces significant pressure to lead the team to the playoffs and potentially to a Super Bowl appearance. Steelers supporters criticized Tomlin after the team’s unsatisfactory departure in last year’s NFL postseason.
Only time will reveal if the Steelers choose to acquire Sanders.
