Well it finally happened. The Steelers trade George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys for a third round pick in next year’s draft. Once the DK Metcalf deal was announced, it was clear that George Pickens days as a Steelers were numbered. The timing, and seeming lack of a backup plan really call into question the front office of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The fact of the matter is the Steelers are right back in the same situation they were in last season, albeit with a much better citizen in DK Metcalf. Once again WR2 on this team is a gigantic hole on the roster, with no apparent solution. There is still time for Omar to make a move to solidify this position, but that was something we said right up until he didn’t in 2024.
As we stand today on May 7th, the Pittsburgh Steelers offense is significantly worse than it was last season. The potential addition of Aaron Rogers now has to be called into question. He has to be looking at this run heavy, wide receiver challenged offense with heavy skepticism.
Omar Khan’s time as the Pittsburgh Steelers general manager seems like a rudderless journey without a clear path. The list of questionable moves with no rhyme or reason are endless.
Trade Dionte Johnson with no clear replacement, only to do the same thing almost exactly a year later with Pickens.
Sign veteran cast offs at quarterback just before the best quarterback draft of the decade, only to clear the room for the second year in a row.
Steer clear of any worthwhile free agents to save comp picks, but trade considerable assets for DK Metcalf and chase Aaron Rodgers all offseason.
Spend the entire 2025 draft overcompensating for the embarrassing loss to the Ravens in the playoffs while ignoring other needs like corner, wide receiver, and offensive line depth.
Signing endless over the hill free agents like Patrick Peterson, Allen Robinson, Van Jefferson, and now Darius Slay
What exactly is the Pittsburgh Steelers plan now, and going forward?
This should come as no surprise as Omar Khan was hired specifically to be Mike Tomlin’s right hand man, not on actual merit. This is the same executive who was turned down repeatedly when applying for general manager jobs outside the organization.
Omar Khan is a bright man, a cap specialist, but not an NFL general manager. The handling of the George Pickens situation is just the latest example of a man deeply over his head. We warned of this the minute Omar Khan was hired. Seems like our fears back in 2023 are coming to fruition.
