The Green Bay Packers shocked the NFL world on Monday when the team released seven-year veteran cornerback Jaire Alexander.
Alexander has been one of the best cornerbacks in the league over the last seven years, but over the previous two seasons, he couldn’t stay on the field.
Alexander played in a total of 14 games over the last two years, which is one reason the Packers released him.
Now that Alexander is on the open market, many teams will try to sign him. Cameron Sheath from Pro Football Network thinks the San Francisco 49ers should sign Alexander.
“The 49ers lost several defensive starters this offseason, including three corners from their 2024 rotation,” Sheath wrote. “Charvarius Ward, Isaac Yiadom, and Rock Ya-Sin combined for 42 appearances and 17 starts last season and are all now on new teams. Right now, San Francisco is expected to start Deommodore Lenoir and second-year player Renardo Green in September.
While that duo is promising, the loss of depth is significant. Lenoir has turned into a strong slot corner, but could be forced to play outside unless reinforcements arrive. Western Kentucky product Upton Stout was drafted in Round 3, though he’ll face a steep learning curve. Alexander could stabilize the group. He’d allow Lenoir to stay inside, give Stout time to develop, and help the 49ers reset after their defensive overhaul.”
Alexander is coming off a four-year, $84 million contract, so he might not be looking for a huge payday but rather a place where he thinks he can win.
