The Cubs Continue To Make Depth-bolstering Moves As They Bridged Another Major Signing Of Relief Pitcher From A Good Team

Posted on April 17, 2025

The Chicago Cubs have been making bold moves during the 2024 MLB offseason. On Wednesday, they traded for Cleveland Guardians relief pitcher Eli Morgan. Additionally, the Cubs continue to bolster their roster depth with news of a second trade, this time acquiring Los Angeles Angels catcher Matt Theiss.

The Cubs announced on X (formerly Twitter) that they acquired Matt Theiss from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for cash considerations. In a corresponding roster move, right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter was designated for assignment. Chicago’s 40-man roster now remains full at 40 players.

Matt Theiss began his MLB journey with the Angels in 2019, establishing a solid foundation. Over 53 games, he recorded 31 hits, eight home runs, a .211 batting average, and a career-best 0.711 OPS. However, he appeared in only 11 additional Major League games over the following two seasons before enjoying a breakout campaign in 2023.

In 95 games, Matt Theiss achieved a career-high with 56 hits and nine home runs, posting a .214 batting average and a .659 OPS. However, his 2024 season saw a dip, as he recorded 32 hits and two home runs with a .204 average and a .622 OPS.

Theiss has the potential to be a valuable depth piece for the Cubs. The team had an average 2024 season, ending with an 83-79 record and placing third in the National League Central.

Chicago is reportedly prioritizing pitching during this free agency period. Adding Eli Morgan has strengthened their roster, but the team also parted ways with veteran pitcher Kyle Hendricks. While Hendricks had hoped to remain with the Cubs, he acknowledges the team’s evolving direction.

“Of course, I would have loved to be a Cub my whole life if it could have happened,” Kyle Hendricks shared after signing with the Angels, according to Maddie Lee of the *Chicago Sun-Times*.

“But you have to perform, and I just couldn’t deliver,” Hendricks admitted. “The Cubs are in a position right now where they’re aiming to win with the foundation they’ve built. I’m genuinely happy for them.”

Chicago is clearly focused on building a competitive roster with an eye on winning. By adding depth like Eli Morgan and acquiring Matt Theiss, they’re reinforcing key areas, but their ability to continue improving will largely depend on strengthening their pitching staff during free agency. If they can make the right moves and further solidify their lineup and chemistry, especially with the right balance of veterans and younger talent, they could position themselves for a stronger showing in 2025. Team chemistry will also play a significant role in fostering a more cohesive and effective squad, which is essential for sustained success.
