Makiah Shipp was raised in Michigan and was born on August 21, 2002. Her family resides with her in Detroit. Her handicapped mother, Mauretta Andrews, a single-parent, raised Shipp and her two older siblings on her own. Shipp had a hard childhood and took inspiration from her mother. She aspires to improve things for her family and other individuals like her.

She attended the Detroit Edition Public School Academy and was also their former class president. She is currently involved with the Rhonda Walker Foundation and Midnight Golf. She did a research internship at the U-M School of Education in 2019, which helped her earn a scholarship from the University of Michigan.
She worked as a research assistant on the Crafting Democratic Futures Project in the Slavery and Its Aftermath sector in 2022 at the University of Michigan Center for Social Solutions.
When Shipp used her right to vote in the 2020 presidential elections for the first time, NBC asked her to contribute to a story about BIPOC Gen-Z voters in key states. She was also featured in “Black Girl Speak” by the S.H.A.U.N. Foundation for Girls.
