Why the Patriots Would Be Crazy to Draft Over Their Proven RB—and What They Risk If They Do
The New England Patriots are entering the 2025 NFL Draft with nine picks, and rumors suggest one may be used on a pass-catching running back. Head coach Mike Vrabel expressed interest in acquiring “good, young runners,” hinting at the possibility of drafting talent for the backfield.
Currently, the Patriots’ running back group is led by Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson. Both players have proven themselves reliable, with Stevenson signing a four-year, $36 million extension and Gibson agreeing to a three-year, $11.25 million deal. Despite Stevenson’s fumbling issues—seven last season—all came while rushing, not receiving. It’s a flaw the team believes can be corrected.
Stevenson has already demonstrated his value as a receiving threat. In 2022, he led the team with 69 receptions for 421 yards. Although his receiving numbers dipped in 2023, he still gained 237 yards after the catch and maintained a strong 77.8% catch rate over his career. He’s totaled 154 catches on 198 targets for 950 yards through four seasons.
While Stevenson must improve ball security, the idea that the Patriots urgently need a pass-catching back may be overstated. More pressing issues—like the offensive line—demand attention. The Patriots ranked last in both running back yards before contact (0.58 per rush) and run block win rate. Vrabel acknowledged the need for better blocking to support runners like Stevenson.
Additionally, Stevenson’s reunion with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could spark another standout season. Under McDaniels in 2021, Stevenson logged 729 scrimmage yards at 5.0 yards per touch. The following season, he surpassed 1,000 rushing yards and again led the team in receptions.
Historically, McDaniels’ offenses utilize versatile backs—players like Kevin Faulk, Danny Woodhead, James White, and Rex Burkhead were key components. Stevenson fits that mold and could thrive in a similar role.
While adding a running back isn’t off the table, it’s clear that other areas of the roster may require more immediate reinforcement. The team already has a capable pass-catching back in Stevenson, and with improved blocking, he could be even more effective.
