Worth a Thousand Words: The 1985 Bears Defense Bears defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan named his innovative “46” defense after safety Doug Plank, his favorite player, who wore number 46 and played for Chicago from 1975 to 1982

The 1985 Chicago Bears’ defense, orchestrated by defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan, remains one of the most formidable units in NFL history. Central to its success was the innovative “46” defense, a strategy that revolutionized defensive play and left an indelible mark on the league. The name “46” was derived not from the number of players or positions but from the jersey number of safety Doug Plank, who epitomized the aggressive and relentless spirit that defined the defense.

Doug Plank’s journey to the Bears was unconventional. After a modest college career at Ohio State, where he played primarily on special teams, Plank was drafted by the Bears in the 12th round of the 1975 NFL Draft. Despite limited expectations, he quickly proved himself as a tenacious and hard-hitting safety, earning a starting role and leading the team in tackles as a rookie—a rare feat for a first-year player.

Buddy Ryan, known for his innovative defensive schemes, recognized Plank’s potential and aggressive playing style. Ryan’s “46” defense was designed to overwhelm offenses with its unpredictability and pressure. Unlike traditional defenses, the “46” featured a stacked defensive line and multiple linebackers, creating confusion and forcing offenses into mistakes. Plank’s role in this system was pivotal; he was often positioned near the line of scrimmage, acting almost as an additional linebacker, ready to blitz or cover as needed.

The “46” defense’s effectiveness was evident in the 1985 season. The Bears’ defense led the NFL in several categories, including points allowed and sacks. In Super Bowl XX, they dismantled the New England Patriots with a 46-10 victory, a testament to the dominance of their defensive strategy.

After the 1982 season, Doug Plank retired from the NFL, but his influence on the Bears’ defense endured. The “46” defense continued to be a cornerstone of the team’s identity, even after Buddy Ryan left for other coaching opportunities.

The “46” defense was more than just a tactical innovation; it was a reflection of Doug Plank’s relentless approach to the game and Buddy Ryan’s visionary coaching. Together, they transformed the Bears’ defense into a force that redefined defensive play in the NFL.
